What Is U-Pick And Why Should I Do It?:
U-Pick is a wonderful opportunity to pick your own fruit with your family or friends. You are invited into our field and granted the rare opportunity to pick your fruit right off the tree or bush. You can taste until you find the tree or variety of your choice. It is a great way to spend the day, and is budget friendly, as picking your own fruit also saves you money!
What Can I Pick Myself?:
Throughout the course of the season, Tachella Family Farms offers many types and varieties of fruit to pick yourself. Some of the fruits we offer for U-Pick during the season are: Cherries, Apricots, Peaches, Nectarines, and Blackberries. However, please realize that many of these products are a very short season, and may not be available when you are requesting them. Please call to check availability before making the drive to the farm! The phone number is (925) 513-8495.
When Are Products Available?:
Below is an estimate of U-Pick availability. Please realize that we are working with Mother Nature, and in no way can we guarantee the availability of any product at any time. Please give us a call before you come out to check what is in season! We have a vast array of varieties, and we are often one of the first U-Pick farms open and one of the last to close. However, these are "educated" guesses on when we may expect to be open for U-Pick:
Cherries: Middle of May to Beginning of June
Apricots: Beginning of June to end of June
Nectarines: Early July to Late August
Peaches: Early July to Middle of September
How Do I Get Started?:
It is super easy. Check in with us, read our rules, grab a bucket (or other provided container) and go! You pick what you want, bring it back to us, and pay for what you pick! We do sometimes have box shortages, so we ask that you try to bring a box to pack your fruit in after it is picked. We can not guarantee a box, and your order may be placed in a paper bag if it is small. Generally, orders of 10-15 lbs. or more will get a box.
Is It Kid Friendly?:
Absolutely. We have had newborns go in to the orchard, and we have also had people who are literally 100 enter the field! We even have a limited number of wagons to place your buckets in so you don't have to lug around big, heavy buckets of sweet fruit! You just pull it instead! We also compact our ground to make it as flat as possible. Although it is not perfect, it is a huge improvement. Also, we have a very young orchard and we take extreme pride in all that we do and grow. We have our trees professionally topped yearly, which causes the tree to grow out and not up. Because of this, no ladders are needed. There is an abundance of fruit in your reach, whether you are 2 feet tall or 7 feet tall, making kids feel included in this awesome experience as well.
When Are You Open for U-Pick?:
It depends on the product you are requesting. Some products may only be available on weekends, while others may be available daily. Occasionally, we also need to close the orchard for a few days for watering as well. We are also closed every Monday and we always stop allowing guests into the field one hour before the fruitstand closes in order to provide optimum picking time for you. Please give us a call to check availability before heading out.
Can I Pay With a Check?:
In general, U-Pick operations in Brentwood, including Tachella Family Farms, are CASH ONLY. We have the ability to accept credit and debit in our fruitstand only, which is separate from the U-Pick operation. Please bring cash with you if you are planning on picking yourself. If you forget, there is a bank up the street. We never take checks.
